Work Permit

How To Get A Canadian Work Permit

Foreign skilled workers usually need a job offer from a Canadian employer and a work permit after completing eligibility requirements before entering the country.

Overview

Applicants for the work permit must show they are eligible for the employment, present documents, and show they have enough money to maintain themselves and their family.

Canada work permit process

If needed, the employer requests a Labour Market Impact Assessment.

The Canadian government has two work permit classifications. Work permits require or are excluded from labour market tests. The labour market test may be needed to prove that granting a work permit to a foreign national will not hurt Canadian workers' salaries and jobs.

Kind workers

Foreign nationals doing charitable work don't need an LMIA to work, but they need a work permit. Because they labour in the labour market and are paid, charitable workers need work permits.

When is LMIA unnecessary?

The following foreign workers need a work visa but not a Labour Market Impact Assessment:

(1) Research award awardees, post-doctoral fellows

(2) Distinguished people, such as field leaders,

(3) Guest lecturers, visiting professors, U.S. and Mexican citizens appointed as professors under NAFTA, and Chilean citizens appointed under CCFTA are all options for appointment.

Employer extends Temporary Job Offer

After receiving the LMIA, the Canadian company can offer the foreign worker a temporary position. Foreign workers must receive a positive LMIA and a detailed job offer letter from their employers. A temporary work permit in Canada can be valid for 6 months to 1 year, depending on the job contract, or 4 years to 7 years, depending on the kind.

Foreign Worker applies for Work Permit

Foreigners may need work permits to work in Canada. Work permits are position- and employer-specific.

The worker must usually apply for a work permit from outside Canada at a visa office in their home country.

Work Permit is issued

The foreign worker will receive the Canada Temporary Work Permit from a CBSA officer online
